When you go to sleep at night, the muscles in your body relax so they can begin to repair themselves to keep you healthy and active every day. For some, these muscles relax to the point where they fall back into the upper airway and block the flow of oxygen from coming in. When you stop breathing during the night, your brain responds by partially waking to send signals to the respiratory system to work harder to get past the obstruction. These stops in breathing usually last for around ten seconds and are often followed by snorts, gasps, or choking sounds as a person’s body fights to resume breathing again. While snoring can be harmless, it can also be the sign of a more serious medical condition known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Left untreated, sleep apnea has been linked to many serious health conditions including heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and other serious health issues.
At Oradental we fabricate an oral appliance for you to wear while you sleep. This custom-made acrylic device fits comfortably between your teeth and holds the jaw slightly forward to open the air passageways. This appliance is a highly effective alternative to a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine for patients who snore and/or have mild to moderate sleep apnea.
