Many wear a mouthguard for teeth grinding and a mouthguard for sleeping. But there are so many other great reasons to wear one regularly. Whether you have TMJ disorder, bruxism, or looking for your next health habit, a night guard may be the right choice for you. Here are six ways a night guard can keep your overall health in tip-top shape. ![night guard](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/5U6A1426.jpg) ### PREVENT HEADACHES AND FACIAL PAIN A proper night guard, preferably a custom dental guard, will adjust your bite to be well-balanced. This effect will allow your jaw muscles to relax for better rest—many patients who wear one report that they feel more rested upon awakening. Night guards can dramatically improve the quality of life in those who suffer from TMD (temporomandibular disorders). They report fewer headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, and facial pain. ### PREVENT SNORING AND SLEEP APNEA Excessive snoring and sleep apnea can usually be traced back to a dental or oral issue. So, the best mode of treatment is to use dental or oral devices. With plenty of dental device options, Dr. Jessica Tasios of Ora Dental can recommend one right for you. The [mandibular advancement device](https://sleepdoctor.com/best-anti-snoring-mouthpieces-and-mouthguards/mandibular-advancement-device/) has been widely successful in treating sleep apnea successfully. It is one of the most popular [dental](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-general/) appliances for the treatment of sleep apnea. Much like a sports mouthguard in appearance, the device gently encourages the bottom jaw to lower and shift forward. This helps to open the airway and improve breathing, thus preventing sleep apnea. ### IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF SLEEP Night guards minimize grinding and clenching to maximize comfort, thus improving your sleep patterns and giving you a better night’s sleep! A night guard will secure your jaw at its optimal position to promote deeper muscle relaxation. When these muscles are relaxed, stress is reduced, and sleep is more efficient. ### PREVENT TEETH FROM SHIFTING Teeth may seem permanently fixed, but they are prone to drift. With the regular use of a night guard, teeth are kept in place, preventing movement – much like a retainer. Older patients with bone loss or those with periodontal disease can rely on a night guard to keep teeth immobile, decelerating tooth loss. ### SAVE MONEY Without a night guard, frequent grinding and clenching of the teeth and jaw can cause chipped teeth, damaged fillings, and excessive corrosion. Over the years, this type of damage can be very costly or even irreversible. With the right guard, your teeth are protected now and down the road. ## Dental Night Guard vs. Over-the-Counter Drugstore night guards don’t always get the job done right. It’s best to work with a dentist to customize one to your unique needs with impressions. Depending on your anatomy and condition, your night guard’s material, shape, and positioning will be altered to fit you exactly. Your dentist will take an impression of your smile and send it to a lab for fabrication. ### DENTAL NIGHT GUARD COSTS Wondering, “How much does a dental night guard cost?” You may be surprised to know that the cost is affordable. Here’s why it’s essential to go to the dentist every six months. “How often should you go to the dentist?” is a common question we’re asked here at Ora Dental. Your dentist in Toronto wants you to know that you should visit us twice a year because the best way to keep proper dental health is by practicing routine oral hygiene, adequate education, and regular dentist visits! Knowing how often you should go to the dentist, you can take better control of your oral health. And while some patients may need more than two checkups and cleanings a year, the Ora Dental team is here to explain the importance of regular dental exams. ![Image of Dr. Jessica Tasios](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/5U6A1173.jpg) # Why you should visit your dentist in Toronto every six months: ## PROFESSIONAL CLEANING Even if you brush and floss your teeth as you should, you still need professional deep cleanings. Our team will remove plaque and tartar buildup that toothbrushes can’t clean off. Regular professional cleanings stop cavities and other dental issues from forming, preventing teeth and bone loss later on. ## DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING Diagnostic imaging, aka X-Rays, find problems with your smile and jaw that the bare eye can’t detect. These concerns include bone loss, wisdom teeth, cavities, and more. With proper imaging, we’ll have a clear, overall picture of your mouth so that we can best care for it. ## PREVENT & TREAT GUM DISEASE To prevent and treat gum disease, a common problem, we use trained expertise and professional tools to get under the gum line to clean and maintain it to its ideal health. Gum disease must be looked for and monitored to prevent long term issues down the road. With prescription mouth rinses and more, we can stop tooth loss before it happens. ## CANCER PREVENTION Oral cancer is more common than you might believe! It accounts for roughly three percent of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States, or about 53,000 new cases each year. Fortunately, oral cancer can be detected at your routine dental visit. With regular dental checkups, you can add quality years to your life with just a few minute-long screenings. ## OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS DIAGNOSIS Did you know that over 120 medical conditions can be diagnosed with a professional oral exam? And many of those are life-threatening. Wow! Since a high percentage of health conditions have an oral component like dry mouth, bad breath, or bleeding gums, dentists can spot them first. These include heart disease, diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, and more—excellent oral health = excellent overall health. Some should see us more than twice a year. For your health and safety, you will generally need to see us more than every six months if you: **• Are pregnant • Have diabetes • Have gum disease • Are prone to cavities or plaque buildup • Smoke or use tobacco products • Have a weakened immune system** We’ve answered your question: “How often should you go to the dentist?” Now we have one for you! Has it been longer than six months since your last dentist appointment? There’s no need to be embarrassed! Without judgment, we gladly await to help you reclaim your oral health. Schedule your appointment with Ora Dental today to keep your smile healthy, beautiful, and bright! When your wisdom teeth are coming in or have been around for years, it’s time to consider wisdom teeth extraction. But not to worry! Wisdom teeth surgery is nothing to be scared of! Wisdom teeth removal is a rather simple and common procedure in dentistry. In fact, we’ve performed hundreds here at Ora Dental. As either the second or final pair of adult teeth an individual develops, wisdom teeth usually come in during the late teenage years or early adulthood. One of the most common reasons for wisdom teeth removal is pain. But if you are not experiencing pain, it’s still imperative a [dentist](https://oradental.ca) examine your teeth and jaw to determine the best course of action. Wisdom teeth removal is a rather quick procedure, and recovery usually only takes 2-7 days; however, before you consider any kind of procedure or surgery, it’s important you are well-informed. We’re here to provide you a clear explanation of what wisdom teeth removal is like. Here are some things you should know: ![Image of Dr. Jessica Tasios](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/5U6A0850.jpg) ## Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure Before removing a wisdom tooth, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be extracted. A general anesthetic may be used, especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed simultaneously. The anesthetic will prevent you from feeling pain by causing you to sleep through the procedure. It is recommended that you don’t eat or drink after midnight on the night before surgery. To remove the wisdom tooth, the gum tissue over the tooth will be carefully opened up over any bone that is covering the tooth that will be taken out. Next, the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone will be separated and then the tooth will be removed. If necessary, the tooth will be cut into smaller, more manageable pieces for removal. After the tooth is removed, stitches may be required. Your dentists will inform you if your stitches are dissolvable or if you will have to follow up to have them removed. A folded cotton gauze pad will be placed to help stop the bleeding. These pads will need to be replaced throughout your healing process – all explained below. ## Wisdom Teeth Removal Aftercare Here are some tips that should be followed to best promote your post-surgery care: ### KEEP YOUR HEAD ELEVATED To reduce swelling, clotting, and more, your head must be kept above heart level. This practice must be kept for at least three days including during sleep. ### NO SPITTING Normal bleeding will occur post-surgery, but spitting out blood is not recommended as it increases the chances of developing a painful dry socket. ### NO SUCKING Using straws to consume beverages is not safe as it creates an opportunity for dry sockets to form through the sucking action. This also includes kissing, whistling, and blowing. ### NO SMOKING Smoke will slow down your healing process and the process of smoking will break the ‘no sucking’ rule. ### USE ICE To prevent swelling and reduce pain, applying ice on the cheek can be a very helpful way to prevent swelling. We highly recommend using icepacks that are specially designed for the face so that you can get the most of this treatment. ### NO BRUSHING Bet you never thought you’d hear a dentist say to not brush your teeth; however, brushing after extraction can do more harm than good. Refraining from teeth brushing can allow the wound to heal more effectively. Give it 1-2 days before you pick up the brush and paste. ### STAY HYDRATED Drink a lot of warm water to accelerate your recovery process. ### AVOID SOLID FOOD The process of chewing solid foods can put pressure on the site of extraction. Consume only liquid or semi-solid foods for the first 24 hours post-surgery. We recommend lukewarm smoothies, broths, and juice. ### NO RINSING Avoid rinsing until the fourth day following surgery. Warm salt water is best for this process. ### AVOID PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Physical activity can lead to dry sockets. To avoid displacing the wound’s blood clot, avoid all physical activity – strenuous or not. ![Wisdom Teeth Removal X Rays](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/AdobeStock_259193611-Edited.jpg) ## Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery Time The better you follow the aftercare steps above, the less time it will take for you to completely recover from [wisdom teeth removal surgery](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-surgery/). Your recovery time also depends on the reasons why you had your wisdom teeth removed. In most cases, it can take 2-7 days for a wisdom tooth wound to heal. Of course, this is based on your adherence to your dentist or oral surgeon’s directions. If complications like pus, fever, or overwhelming pain occur, please contact your dentist immediately. ## Wisdom Teeth Removal Risks Like all medical procedures, wisdom teeth extraction has its risks. Fortunately, the risks associated with tooth extraction are extremely rare. The safety of this procedure advances the more experienced a dentist is. Our dentists have performed thousands of successful extractions collectively – you’re in the best hands at Ora Dental. Some of the risks associated with wisdom teeth removal include: **• Dry sockets. These develop as a result of the loss of a blood clot in the jawbone’s extraction site, painfully exposing a nerve. • Possible infection. The wound can be infected by bacteria from food particles, but most bacterial infections can be easily treated with antibiotics. • Surrounding damage. Surrounding structures like bone, soft tissue, nerves, or sinuses can become damaged during the procedure.** ## Where to Get Wisdom Teeth Removed in Toronto Finding the right wisdom teeth removal dentist in Toronto is an important step to a successful procedure. While traditional braces are associated with bulky metal brackets, the beauty of Invisalign is that it is invisible, and unless you tell someone, nobody will know that you are actually wearing braces. Plus, you can take them out during events like eating or sports activities, which gives these clear aligners even more of an advantage. Because of the hassle-free benefits that come with choosing Invisalign as the path to straighter teeth, more and more people all over the world are requesting consultations with their dentists to discuss Invisalign. But how much do they cost in Canada? ![Dental Cost of Invisalign in Canada](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/ora-dental-cost-of-invisalign-scaled.jpg) It is important to note that the amount you will pay for any cosmetic work depends on many factors, such as your location, what your dental insurance (if any) will cover, your [dentist](https://oradental.ca) or [orthodontist](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-orthodontics/)’s level of expertise, and their labor, as well as the severity of your dental case. The cost of an Invisalign treatment is dependent on where exactly you are in Canada. Usually, the cost ranges from $2,000 to $8,500. However, this cost can be reduced significantly if you carry dental insurance. If you do not have insurance, you may be eligible for a payment plan! For example, if your Invisalign treatment costs $6,750, you could pay as little as $375 a month for the duration of your treatment! How long (or short) your payment plan is will depend on the number of treatments needed for your case. Your doctor would be happy to talk to you in detail about this option. And we at Ora Dental can inform you about your pricing options should you choose the Invisalign treatment. Call today to schedule your free Invisalign consultation! [BOOK APPOINTMENT](https://oradental.ca/book-appointment/) ## FAQs ### **What qualifies you for Invisalign?** There are many factors that can qualify someone for Invisalign, including one’s age and specific smile goals. Patients that want to correct gapped or overcrowded teeth, underbites, overbites, and cross-bites are good candidates for Invisalign. However, younger children and patients with dental implants, TMJ disorder, or bridges may not be the best candidates. Every case is different, so make sure to call your qualified [dentist near you](https://oradental.ca) or orthodontist to get a consultation and see if Invisalign is right for you. ### **Is Invisalign better than braces?** Invisalign is a more modern and advanced way to straighten your smile compared to traditional braces, and it may be a better alternative to those seeking treatment in a discreet way, as the trays are clear and practical. The benefits of Invisalign are endless – you can eat and drink whatever you want, whenever you want because you can simply remove your trays. Dental hygiene is also better because nothing is attached to the teeth, so you can brush freely. There are pros and cons to both Invisalign and braces, so if you want to understand which is the better fit for you, get a consultation from a qualified [dentist](https://oradental.ca)/orthodontist near you. ### **Is Invisalign bad for your teeth?** Invisalign does not harm your teeth in any way. It is completely safe and beneficial to your dental health if you are suffering from overcrowded teeth, an overbite, or underbite. It’s a great option for those wanting to align their teeth in a transparent way, eliminating the need for metal braces. It is good to keep in mind that there may be an increased risk for cavities and gum disease if your oral health is not taken care of properly. ### **Does Invisalign hurt?** There is some mild discomfort over the course of Invisalign treatment, but most wouldn’t consider Invisalign to be as painful as braces. Invisalign is designed to be more comfortable because there aren’t any brackets to rub against your gums like with braces. During the first few days of each new tray cycle (every two weeks), some patients may experience more discomfort, but it will adjust over time. Over-the-counter painkillers and cold compresses can be used to combat any mild pain. **Categories:** Uncategorized --- ### [Signs You Need a Gum Lift](https://oradental.ca/signs-you-need-a-gum-lift/) **Published:** June 8, 2021 **Author:** Ora Dental **Content:** Healthy smiles start at the gums. A gum lift is a cosmetic and medical dental procedure that will raise and sculpt the gum line to give the appearance of a longer and more symmetrical smile. Often referred to as gum contouring or gum reshaping and is carried out when a patient is experiencing a loss in normal gumline coverage or when gums cover too much of the tooth surface, causing teeth to appear much smaller than desired. ![Gum Lift](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ora-dental-gum-lift-blog1.jpg) ## WHAT ARE THE SIGNS I NEED A GUM LIFT? There are two major signs that you need a gum lift. The first sign you need one is if you are experiencing a receding gum line where the root of the tooth is exposed. Exposed tooth roots are a sign of [periodontal disease](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-surgery/) and can lead to damage to the tooth, or even tooth loss if not taken care of immediately. Another sign you need a gum lift could simply be feeling as though your gums are too large and covering too much of your teeth. Gum lifts can be a fully cosmetic dental procedure to give patients the straight, beautiful, and symmetrical smile they desire. - The root of the tooth is exposed. - You have a desire to improve the appearance of your smile. - You feel your teeth are “too small” or your gums are “too big.” ## IS GETTING A GUM LIFT PAINFUL? No, gum lifts are completely painless. Gum lifts are performed by our highly-trained [Scarborough dentists](https://oradental.ca) and oral surgeons using local anesthetics to numb the treatment area before surgery, so there may be mild discomfort as the anesthesia wears off. At Ora, we gently and safely manage a wide variety of oral health concerns with the highest level of surgical care possible. Our relaxing environment combined with our state-of-the-art technology will make you feel confident that you’re receiving the best care available. Your gums will not grow back after a gum lift because the bone underneath is also contoured. This ensures life-long results, and no more gummy smiles! ### **How long does a gum lift last?** In most cases, gum lifts are permanent and don’t need to be repeated. That’s why getting a gum lift is an incredible choice for those unhappy with their smile due to receding gums, excess gums, or overcrowding teeth. The results are immediate, long-term, and beautiful. ### **Are gum lifts painful?** Gum lift procedures are not painful because the area is completely numbed with local anesthesia. Although the procedure is painless, you may experience slight discomfort during the healing stage. Any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers and ice packs. ### **How much is a gum lift?** The price for a gum lift can vary depending on the specific dental office you seek treatment, and also on expertise. The price also varies per case since every patient requires a personalized plan based on the amount of tissue treated. On average, gum lifts or gum contouring can range from $200-$3,000. For only one tooth, the cost ranges from $50-$350 or up to $3,000 for all your front top teeth. Gum lifts are often considered a cosmetic procedure, and for that reason are not covered by dental insurance. However, if your dentist recommends a gum lift for oral health reasons, it may be partially covered by your dental insurance. **Categories:** Uncategorized --- ### [Going to the Dentist Pregnant](https://oradental.ca/going-to-the-dentist-pregnant/) **Published:** February 10, 2021 **Author:** Ora Dental **Content:** ## CAN I GO TO THE DENTIST PREGNANT? Yes! And here are the reasons why it’s so important to go to the dentist pregnant. Congratulations on becoming a mother! Whether this is your first pregnancy or fifth, we want to help make this exciting journey as easy as possible for both of you. It’s important to mention that dental health is imperative to your overall health and prenatal health. We’re here to let you in on everything you need to know for oral health during pregnancy. You want the best for you and your baby. So you may be wondering if dental care is safe during pregnancy. It is! And due to the nature of pregnancy, it’s vital to maintain excellent oral health during these nine months. Pregnancy can increase your risk for oral health issues, causing a problem that can affect you and your baby. Recent studies have shown that there is a correlation between gum disease and premature birth. Visiting your dentist, healthy habits, and proper dental care during pregnancy can help you have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. ![image of pregnant woman](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/AdobeStock_276920916-scaled-e1612996948220.jpg) ### HOW PREGNANCY AFFECTS YOUR DENTAL HEALTH: During pregnancy, many changes in your body occur, including in your teeth and gums. When pregnant, your body increases its levels of certain hormones, like progesterone and estrogen. These can increase your risk for specific oral health problems by causing more blood flow to the teeth and gums. As you may already have noticed, your eating habits may change. Talk about cravings! You may eat more of certain foods during pregnancy than you did before you were pregnant, especially foods higher in sugar and acid. These kinds of food you eat can negatively affect your dental health. Due to nausea, tiredness, and sensitive gums, you may brush and floss your teeth less than you did before you got pregnant. Uncleaned teeth leave the opportunity for bacteria to form, creating dental issues down the road. ### LOOK FOR THESE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DENTAL PROBLEMS DURING PREGNANCY: Be sure to call your dentist if you have any pain or swelling or any of these signs or symptoms of dental problems listed below. Pain and swelling is a sign of infection and should be treated immediately to protect your baby. **Signs and symptoms of oral health problems include:** - Toothache or other pain - Loose teeth - Teeth shifting/spacing - Bad breath - Receding gums - Pus in gums - Red, swollen, tender, or shiny gums - Gums that bleed easily - Mouth sores or lumps on the gums ## ARE DENTAL X-RAYS SAFE DURING PREGNANCY? One of the most common questions we get from expecting mothers is, “Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy?” Contrary to popular belief, X-rays are safe during pregnancy! X-rays are part of regular dental care and give your dentist an inside look to discover hidden problems with your teeth, gums, and the bones around your mouth. X-rays use radiation to take a picture on film and can only be harmful to your health when overexposed. Dental X-rays are safe during pregnancy because they use minimal amounts of radiation. For extra assurance, your dentist will cover you with a lead-filled apron and collar to protect you and your baby. Before receiving an X-ray, always let your doctor know that you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. ### HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY DURING AND AFTER YOUR PRENATAL JOURNEY: **Brush your teeth** - Use fluoride toothpaste twice a day and floss once a day. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Regular brushing and flossing can remove plaque and help keep your teeth and gums healthy. - Too nauseous to brush your teeth? Use antacids or rinse your mouth with water and baking soda. Just combine 1 teaspoon baking soda with 1 cup of warm water. This can reduce the amount of acid in your mouth. Be sure to consult with your doctor before trying antacids for nausea or any other medication. **Visit your dentist** - Have a dental checkup every six months, even during pregnancy. Be sure to let your dentist know you’re pregnant. **Eat healthy foods and limit sweets.** - Choose fruits and vegetables, lean meat, whole-grain bread and pasta, and low-fat dairy products as much as possible. - Decrease your consumption of sweets and sugary foods and drink water instead of sugary drinks. - Opt for water instead of high-sugar drinks. Eating healthy foods is not only great for you but for providing essential nutrients for your growing baby as well. - Believe it or not, your baby’s teeth start developing between 3 and 6 months of pregnancy. Protein, phosphorus, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and D, will give your baby what he or she needs for healthy teeth. **Don’t smoke.** ![Dr. Jessica Tasios holding electric toothbrush](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/5U6A0650-2.jpg) Looking for a dentist who will care for you and your growing baby well? Schedule your consultation with Dr. Jess today. She would love to give you and your child the compassionate, honest, leading-edge care you both deserve. [BOOK APPOINTMENT](https://oradental.ca/book-appointment/) ## FAQs ### **Is dental anesthesia safe during pregnancy?** Yes! In most cases, local anesthesia is used for dental procedures and is safe for pregnant women. Local anesthesia is injected via syringe and does not travel through the bloodstream, so it won’t harm the baby. However, most dentists recommend intense dental surgeries be postponed until after the baby is born if the treatment is not essential. ### **Can you get a tooth pulled while pregnant?** If you are pregnant and need a tooth extraction, don’t worry, it is safe for both you and your baby. There is, however, an optimal period to get your tooth pulled during pregnancy – the second trimester. The first trimester should be avoided if possible because it’s when the baby is first developing, and the third trimester is challenging as the stationary position may be uncomfortable for a long period of time. The second trimester is best because most of your baby’s organs will be fully developed. You should 100% get a tooth extraction if you are in severe pain and if there’s a risk of infection or permanent damage to the gums or teeth. ### **Laying on back at the dentist while pregnant?** As pregnancy progresses, comfort levels will usually decrease. For this reason, sitting in a dental chair may be harder during your last trimester. If dental treatment is absolutely necessary during the third trimester, make sure not to lie on your back. Lying on your back will add pressure to your vena cava which can limit blood flow to the fetus, creating nausea or premature labor. You’ll want to lie slightly twisted to the side while having dental work done, but if possible, schedule your appointment during the second trimester. ### **Can you get fluoride at the dentist while pregnant?** This is a valid question that many pregnant women ask, and has been scientifically researched for years. Ultimately, it is completely safe and beneficial to your health to get fluoride treatment during pregnancy. However, make sure you only rinse and not swallow any of the fluoride directly as it can upset your stomach and give you too much fluoride at once. **Categories:** Uncategorized --- ### [Do's & Don'ts After Tooth Extraction](https://oradental.ca/dos-donts-after-tooth-extraction/) **Published:** January 24, 2022 **Author:** Ora Dental **Content:** Let’s face it, getting a tooth extracted isn’t fun, but it’s necessary to keep your smile healthy and happy. Whether you’re getting a tooth extracted due to overcrowding, trauma, decay, or wisdom teeth, knowing how to care for the extraction area after surgery is crucial. And with the guidance from our expert dentists at [Ora Dental,](https://oradental.ca) your postoperative healing process can go smoothly and quickly. That means less pain, less problems, and less recovery time after your tooth extraction. Just follow our **Do’s & Don’ts** definitive guide down below and be on your way to a speedy recovery! ![Getting a tooth Extraction](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/ora-blog-dos-and-donts-after-tooth-extraction-scaled.jpg) # Post-op Do’s: ### Do: Allow the Extraction Site to Clot Bleeding after [tooth extraction](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-surgery/) is totally normal. Over time, the extraction site will form a blood clot which will prevent the area from bleeding more. This is highly important to prevent complications like dry sockets or infections. Make sure to keep the area clear of food particles or anything sharp during this time to promote a healthy blood clot. ### Do: Promote Blood Clot Development By: Packing gauze over the extraction site and applying pressure to the area. This will help stop the bleeding, encouraging development of the blood clot. Change the gauze when necessary – every few hours is normal. ### Do: Apply Ice Packs to Your Face If you are experiencing increased swelling or pain, try applying ice packs to the side of your face that’s affected. Do this for 15 minutes at a time for the first 24 hours until swelling and pain subside. ### Do: Make Sure to Take Your Prescribed Medication If your dentist prescribes you a specific medication or over-the-counter pain medication, make sure you are taking it at the recommended time and following all directions. [Dentists](https://oradental.ca/) may recommend antibiotics for infection. If this is the case, you must take these as prescribed. Following your dentist’s post-op advice is pivotal to the healing process, reducing pain and the risk of complications like infection or dry socket. ### Do: Avoid Vigorous Activity & Rest Up In order to heal properly after tooth extraction, your body needs rest and time. It’s important to not be too eager to get back into your daily routine. Your body needs to rest for at least 24 hours. This means no vigorous exercise for at least 48 hours after oral surgery. Also, make sure to elevate your head while sleeping. This small change can help blood clot development. ### Do: Only Eat Soft Foods For at least the first 48 hours, food can irritate the extraction area. For this reason, it’s important to stick to eating soft foods only. This includes foods like eggs, apple sauce, soup, yogourt, mashed potatoes, soft fruits, jello, and pudding. You’ll want to continue eating this way until the extraction site is fully healed. ### Do: Avoid the Extraction Site While Brushing While maintaining great oral health care is key to keeping a healthy smile, make sure to avoid your extraction site while brushing and flossing at all costs. Continue to brush and floss as normal, but never come in contact with the tooth socket until it is completely healed. ### Do: Rinse With Saline After the clot is developed after the first 48 hours, make sure to rinse your mouth with saline to kill any bacteria that can risk infection. Simply mix together warm water and salt to create your own saline solution at home. Rinse your mouth gently, then let the water drain slowly – no spitting. ![Recovering from Tooth Extraction: Dos and Don'ts](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/ora-blog-dos-and-donts-after-tooth-extraction-img2.jpg) # Post-op Don’ts: ### Don’t: Use straws A major “don’t” after a tooth extraction is using straws. The blood clot can become dislodged when sucking through a straw, increasing the chances of dry socket development. Straws should not be used for at least 48 hours after oral surgery. ### Don’t: Chew on the Same Side of the Extraction It’s important to use the other side of your mouth while chewing to decrease the risk of food particles entering the tooth socket. Make sure to only chew on the opposite side until the extraction site is completely healed. ### Don’t: Smoke The chemicals in tobacco can greatly affect blood clotting. If a patient smokes post-surgery, the risk of dry socket increases substantially. Wait at least 48 hours after your extraction to smoke if necessary. ### Don’t: Eat Hard or Chewy Foods For 10 days, or until the extraction site heals, we recommend avoiding hard, chewy, or sharp foods. It is also critical to say no to foods with small grains or seeds that can disrupt or irritate the socket. Smoothies may sound like a good, tasty idea, but if they’re packed with seeds, make sure you steer clear. ### Don’t: Drink Carbonated Beverages or Alcohol Alcohol and any carbonated beverage can cause damage to your developing blood clot. In order to prevent any complications, avoid these two types of drinks for at least four days. ### Don’t: Spit or Blow Your Nose While you can allow blood or saliva to drain slowly from your mouth, you should never spit after a tooth extraction. This creates unwanted pressure on the mouth which can negatively affect your blood clot. Along with spitting, blowing your nose can cause the same pressure and should be avoided when possible. ### Don’t: Use Your Tongue to Play With the Socket It’s important to not probe the extraction area with your tongue. Sure the site may feel odd without a tooth present, but make sure to leave it alone. Probing the area with your tongue can dislodge the clot and increase risk of complications. We hope you benefit from our lists of Do’s and Don’ts and have a speedy and pain-free recovery! We’re here to explain what causes bad breath and how you can eliminate it. So forget hesitating when someone is close, and speak with confidence by curing bad breath permanently. Read on to learn from our dental experts on how to cure bad breath fast. ![Image of Dr. Jessica Tasios](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/image0.jpeg) ## Common Causes of Bad Breath Ever wondered what causes bad breath? Here are the common culprits: **Sleep** – When you sleep, saliva movement comes to an almost halt, dramatically reducing cleansing and renewal. Thus, when laid stagnant, bacteria can grow in your mouth and create that infamous morning breath. **Periodontal (gum) disease** – An infection of the gums that breaks down tissue and teeth, creating a foul aroma in the process. **Cavities** – Dental cavities can create an odor from the bacteria positioned inside the cavities. **Tobacco products** – Amongst other health problems, smoke dries the mouth, causing bad breath. **Foods** – Certain foods may release odor-causing compounds. **Dieting** – Ketones are released in the breath when the body burns fats. This commonly occurs during exercise. **Ear, nose, & throat issues** – Allergies, chronic sinus infection, postnasal drip, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and respiratory infection are all causes of halitosis. Now that you know the causes of bad breath, you can learn how to eliminate bad breath. Here are easy steps you can implement to get rid of bad breath: ### REGULAR FLOSSING & BRUSHING You’ve heard it before, brush two minutes, twice a day. It’s not only for the good of your oral health, but great hygiene is your best defense against bad breath. So be sure to brush for a full two minutes (set a timer!) twice a day, and floss at least once a day. Preferably with an electric, rotating head toothbrush – Dr. Jess recommends this one. Spend 30 seconds brushing each quadrant of your mouth, coming in contact with all chewing surfaces of your teeth. Floss at night to remove any food debris – this keeps bacteria growth to a minimum. And be sure to floss gently as you make your way up to the gum line, working the string back and forth as you hug each tooth with the floss. ### TONGUE SCRAPER Sometimes mouthwash and a toothbrush just won’t cut it – it’s time to take your tongue cleaning to the next level! Acting like carpet, your tongue holds onto biofilm, gunk of bad-smelling bacteria. Once the biofilm is removed, you can get rid of bad breath! Unfortunately, toothbrush brushing just moves your tongue’s bacteria around instead of removing it. A couple of passes with a tongue scraper can remove the smelly gunk on your tongue. Order Dr. Jess’ favorite tongue scraper here. You’ll notice less and less biofilm the more and more you use the scraper – don’t stop! ### AVOIDING CERTAIN FOODS Choose breath-friendly foods and beverages. Sugary foods and drinks, garlic, onions, coffee, and alcohol can all cause bad breath. But if you can’t avoid these foods and drinks, then counteract them by drinking plenty of water and rinsing out your mouth with water after each use. This process will protect your teeth and mouth by washing away food particles and increasing the saliva flow in your mouth. Some foods cause bad breath and some foods help fight bad breath! Fibrous vegetables high in water content like carrots, celery, and apples work as natural toothbrushes, scrubbing plaque bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth. You’ll get your veggies in as you get fresher breath! Score. ### USE AN ANTIMICROBIAL MOUTHWASH Antimicrobial mouthwashes are much more effective than everyday mouthwashes. With a mild potency of antimicrobials, over-the-counter mouthwashes can only eliminate a small number of microbes or bacteria in the mouth. Prescription-based mouthwashes are powerful enough to knock out bacteria at an almost undetectable level. Used as directed by your [dentist](https://oradental.ca), an antimicrobial mouthwash can fast track you to a cleaner, fresher mouth. [Book your appointment](https://oradental.ca/book-appointment/) and see if you’re a candidate for an antimicrobial mouthwash prescription. ### AVOIDING TOBACCO There are many reasons to quit smoking. Preventing heart disease or lung cancer is number one. Eliminating bad breath is number two. Smoke alone is an unpleasant odor and can seep into your gum tissues to stay. To make matters worse, its drying effect dehydrates your mouth to create an environment that’s ideal for odor-causing bacteria to multiply and amplify bad breath. Give up the bad habit and enjoy more confidence and better health from the inside out. ### VISIT ORA DENTAL Showing up for yourself is showing up to your [six-month dentist appointments](https://oradental.ca/why-dental-check-ups-are-important/). The only times people do go are for routine exams and when they are in pain. That would include wisdom tooth pain. Pain should motivate you to see your dentist right away. ![Wisdom teeth typically cause pain because they are impacted](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/dentists-recommend-removing-them-as-soon-as-they-start-erupting-1024x774.jpeg) Wisdom teeth typically cause pain because they are impacted. Impacted teeth mean they aren’t growing straight as they should. It’s incredibly common for wisdom teeth to grow out of kilter with other teeth, which is why most dentists recommend removing them as soon as they start erupting. ### There are four common ways an impacted wisdom tooth will grow: **At an angle toward the back of the mouth** **At an angle leaning toward the next tooth** **Growing directly toward the other teeth. This is sometimes say a wisdom tooth is “lying down” because it is lying flat within the jawbone rather than straight up and down.** **Growing trapped in the jawbone even though it is straight.** **Partially growing or not growing at all, trapped in the jawbone.** **Problems with Wisdom Teeth** Some of the reasons why erupting wisdom teeth cause pain is because they trap food and debris. That can lead to gum infection or tooth decay. Wisdom teeth can cause damage to other teeth or the jawbone and that will cause pain. A cyst could develop around the wisdom tooth and that can cause pain. Pain stemming from an erupting wisdom tooth won’t go away. Wisdom teeth are often damaged or sustain decay quickly because it is difficult to keep them clean. They are in the extreme back of the mouth and that makes flossing, brushing, and cleaning challenges Trying to keep them clean becomes more cumbersome if the patient has a smaller mouth. That typically leads to future dental problems. ### When to See Your Dentist The recommendation is to schedule a [dental appointment](https://oradental.ca/book-appointment/) when you start to feel or see wisdom teeth coming in. They don’t typically come in at the same time. You may have one or two come in and the other two will erupt months later. Getting your wisdom teeth removed as they are erupting will limit your pain. However, those who start to experience pain should call their dentist immediately and schedule an appointment. The other time to pay attention to pain and other symptoms is after you’ve had your wisdom tooth removed either at your local dentist’s office or through more complicated oral surgery by an oral surgeon. Be sure to have an emergency number on hand for the dentist or surgeon performing the procedure in case you have pain or other issues after you get home. Some possible issues to be aware of are excessive bleeding, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe pain, a bad taste in your mouth, loss of feeling in the mouth, and blood or pus in nasal discharge. Any of these symptoms require you to call your [dentist](https://oradental.ca) or oral surgeon immediately. Anyone with these types of problems will require at least one follow-up appointment. Most dental patients don’t need a follow-up appointment after extraction if no complications were occurring during the procedure or if they don’t have ongoing, persistent problems. ### Aftercare for Wisdom Tooth Removal The three reasons you will have wisdom tooth pain are either an infection that exists in a wisdom tooth that hasn’t been removed, a wisdom tooth that is growing improperly, or the pain that exists after surgery. Those with wisdom tooth pain before surgery have no option but to see their dentist. The pain isn’t going to go away. Some dentists don’t have quick appointments or emergency care like we do. There are some home remedies you can use to manage the pain until you can see your dentist. A saltwater rinse is fairly effective on most toothaches. It keeps the area clean of bacteria and can lessen the pain. It can be especially helpful if you have a gum infection or a cyst at the bottom of the tooth because a saltwater rinse will clear bacteria out. Another home remedy is to soak a cotton ball in peppermint extract and then place it on the area of pain. Be sure to rub it directly on your teeth. You can also use cooled peppermint tea as a mouth rinse and that should also relieve wisdom teeth pain. ### Pain After Surgery Those with discomfort after wisdom tooth surgery can do some things to make it better before deciding to call their dentist. You should have a prescription pain reliever from your dentist or oral surgeon. Don’t be shy about using it. The pain will start as your local anesthetic is wearing off. You will need the medication for at least two days. Don’t try to brush your teeth. That could harm the stitches if you have stitches. Use a mouthwash or a mouth rinse instead for 24 hours after surgery. Don’t try to eat normally because of the wound and stitches. Trying to chew hard things, eating things that are extremely cold or hot, and chewy things will cause pain Instead, go for soft things for the first day. That would include gelatin, pudding, mashed potatoes, and some soups if they aren’t too hot. Also, stay away from spicy things as that will irritate the surgical area. One piece of advice your dentist will give you is to drink lots of water. Stay away from most other beverages like alcohol, carbonated, caffeinated, and sugary drinks for at least a day or so. Water will help keep the area clean and continue to wash debris away. Ice packs on the side of the face where the surgery occurred can help with swelling and pain. You will have some swelling so don’t let that alarm you. ### Seeing Your Dentist People aren’t always sure about when to call their dentist or oral surgeon about pain. They don’t want to overreact or take up the dentist’s tie when there isn’t anything out of the norm. However, people should trust themselves and their instincts. They shouldn’t feel they must suffer with pain when they could have relief. Don’t be afraid to call your dentist if you have pain from a wisdom tooth, either one that is erupting or the space where surgery occurred. Your dentist or oral surgeon can help you relieve the pain and create a permanent solution. **Categories:** Dental --- ### [How important are natural supplements for dental oral care?](https://oradental.ca/how-important-are-natural-supplements-for-dental-oral-care/) **Published:** May 3, 2023 **Author:** Ora Dental **Categories:** Dental --- ### [The 3 Different Types of Dental Cleanings](https://oradental.ca/the-3-different-types-of-dental-cleanings/) **Published:** April 21, 2021 **Author:** Ora Dental **Content:** We all know you should come to the dentist for a cleaning at least every 6 months to maintain your oral health (and to maintain a smile that you’re proud to show off!). Teeth cleanings are a normal part of oral hygiene. They involve the removal of plaque from the tooth surface (that is too tough to get with your toothbrush or floss) and prevent future cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. These appointments are generally covered by your dental insurance and should be set up to reoccur every 6 months at least depending on your oral health. Did you know that there are actually three different types of dental cleanings? Your dental hygienist and dentist will help you decide which one you need and how often. ![The 3 Different Types of Dental Cleanings](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/ora-blog-dental-cleaning-1.jpg) ### 1. NORMAL DENTAL CLEANING The most common dental cleanings are referred to as “regular cleanings” or “normal cleanings” (or “prophylaxis” if you want to get technical) and are performed by your dental hygienist every six months during your routine dental check-ups. Even if you brush and floss your teeth as you should, you still need professional cleanings because they are the only way to remove the plaque and tartar buildup that toothbrushes simply can’t. Regular professional cleanings will ensure that your mouth, teeth, and gums stay healthy and strong while preventing cavities and other dental issues from forming in the future. ### 2. PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE Periodontal Maintenance is very similar to normal cleanings, with an emphasis on stopping or preventing periodontal disease. Periodontitis is a gum infection that is fairly common, but preventable with regular cleanings! A Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning is a deep cleaning that will remove tartar and plaque (just like a regular cleaning) but also includes scaling and root planing between the teeth and gums. During this cleaning, your dentist will examine/measure the pockets of your gums to look for inflammation to prevent future infection, discomfort, and disease. ![The 3 Different Types of Dental Cleanings](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/ora-blog-dental-cleaning-1.jpg) ### 3. FULL MOUTH DEBRIDEMENT A Full Mouth Debridement (FMD) goes a step further than the average deep cleaning and is generally only prescribed when a patient has not had a regular cleaning for several years, causing a severe amount of plaque and buildup between the teeth and gums. A Full Mouth Debridement is a nonsurgical procedure carried out by your dentist to remove the plaque and tartar that has begun to imbed itself into the teeth and gums that has caused so much inflammation that it actually prevents a regular cleaning or exam. It is our hope that most patients will never need a Full Mouth Debridement – but if you do, we will get you on a schedule for regular cleanings and back to optimal oral health in no time! No matter which type of dental cleaning you need, at Ora Dental, this is one appointment you won’t want to miss. From the moment you walk through our doors, you’ll be invited to relax with a warm eucalyptus towel, noise-canceling headphones, and full control of our all-inclusive entertainment system. You may be wondering if you’ll lose the tooth or if your condition will get worse before you can get to a dentist. Stay calm and take the necessary steps. We’ll cover how you can handle the most common dental emergencies and how Ora Dental, a [dental clinic in Scarborough, Ontario,](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-general/) that offers emergency dental care, can help. ![Dental Emergency](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Dental-Emergency-scaled.jpeg) # General Rules for Dental Emergencies In a survey of about 2,000 Canadian adults, 15% reported a history of [dental emergencies and injuries](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17803486/). Though they vary in nature and severity, there are a few common rules to follow: - Rinse with a warm saltwater solution of 1 teaspoon of salt per cup of water. This can encourage healing and partially cleanse the area. - Never store teeth or parts of teeth in water. Use milk instead or keep the tooth between your gum and cheek. It must stay moist at all times. - Always call a dentist as soon as possible. Seeing a dentist within the hour after a dental emergency may improve your chances of saving the tooth. - If there is significant blood loss or trauma, consider a trip to the nearest emergency room. With those guidelines in mind, let’s talk about how to handle specific dental emergencies. ### Knocked-out Teeth While it can happen to anyone, nearly 50% of children experience a [dental emergency including knocked-out teeth](https://www.uptodate.com/contents/mouth-and-dental-injuries-in-children-beyond-the-basics#:~:text=Nearly%2050%20percent%20of%20children,Mouth%20injuries%20are%20also%20common.) at some point in their lives. Experts recommend using mouth guards to prevent it from happening no matter your age. Retrieve the missing tooth by picking it up by the top, also known as the crown. Because the root is sensitive, it may break. Also, never attempt to scrub a knocked-out tooth — a gentle rinse with water should be enough. In this dental emergency, there are two ways to preserve the lost tooth. The first is to place it in a cup of milk or on the inside of the cheek. The second and most ideal is to place the tooth back in its socket gently. However, if there’s other trauma or excess bleeding, do not try to force the tooth back in. In some cases, the dentist may be able to put the tooth back in immediately. They may also use a splint to keep the tooth in position as the gums absorb it. ### Broken Teeth If possible, save the piece of broken tooth in milk. Rinse your mouth with salt water. If the area is bleeding, apply gauze and pressure for at least 10 minutes. Use ice packs and over-the-counter painkillers to ease discomfort and swelling. Dentists typically repair broken teeth by filing it down and affixing a crown to it. In extreme cases, they may perform a root canal. ### Chipped Teeth Save the piece that chipped off of your tooth in milk. With chipped teeth, the remaining tooth may be sharp and cut your gums, tongue or cheek. Put gauze over the area to protect the rest of your mouth. When just the enamel is damaged, a dentist can repair it quickly with a filling. If it’s in a visible part of your mouth, they may fill the area with resin matched to the color of the rest of your teeth. ### Toothaches At the center of every tooth, there’s a bundle of nerve endings called pulp. When it’s exposed due to tooth decay or dental trauma, bacteria or food particles irritate it. This is one of the most common causes of a toothache. However, jaw pain may radiate into your mouth and make a tooth hurt, as well. If the pain is coming from the tooth itself, rinse with saltwater, brush and floss very gently. If the area is swollen or pain is coming from the jaw, apply an ice pack. If needed, take an over-the-counter painkiller or anti-inflammatory medication. How a dentist treats a toothache is determined by the cause. If it’s an infection, they may perform a root canal. If it’s because of a cavity, they may use a filling. In some cases, a bit of stuck food causes an infection. When this happens, a [dentist](https://oradental.ca/the-3-different-types-of-dental-cleanings/) may perform a teeth cleaning and prescribe antibiotics. ### Abscesses An abscess in your gums, teeth or mouth may feel like a severe toothache. However, it’s not necessarily the result of exposed pulp. An abscess forms as the result of a bacterial infection. It can occur just about anywhere around your mouth or jaw. The pain from an abscess may spread to other parts of your body, so prompt treatment is essential. Rinse with saltwater and take over-the-counter painkillers until you see a dentist. The dentist may drain the abscess, perform a root canal or pull out the infected tooth. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help clear the infection. ### Lost Dental Appliances If you have a crown, filling or other [dental appliance](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-orthodontics/), it can be knocked out or broken just like a regular tooth. Save every piece you can find. If losing a dental appliance leaves a jagged edge along your tooth, cover it with gauze to prevent it from cutting your mouth. If it might be a bit before you can get to the dentist, many pharmacies have over-the-counter dental cements available. If you have any questions about how to apply it, consult your dentist by phone. You can also use dental cement to keep an intact crown in place until you see a dentist. However, scrub the crown with toothpaste before attempting. When the tooth a filling or [crown](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-cosmetic/) covers is in good health, a dentist may just clean and replace it. However, losing a filling may be a sign that there’s something else wrong. Your dentist will inspect the area and discuss a plan with you. ### Emergency Dental Care in Scarborough After any kind of dental emergency, [Ora Dental of Scarborough](https://oradental.ca) can help. Unfortunately, we’ve all been a victim of being around someone with breath that isn’t so fresh. We try to avoid them, and if we can’t avoid them, we keep our distance. As bad as smelling unpleasant breath is, it’s even worse giving it off! You deserve to speak and laugh without fear of pushing away someone with your bad breath. To know how to get rid of bad breath, we need to know what causes it. Hint: it’s not just eating garlic and onions! Keep reading to learn the causes of bad breath and how to treat it. ### POOR DENTAL HYGIENE Food particles left inside your mouth provide a meal for bacteria. When bacteria break down this food, they create an odor. This same bacteria creates a layer of plaque and acid on your teeth, leading to tooth decay, gum disease, sensitive teeth, and bad breath. Your teeth are not only susceptible to bacteria growth, but your tongue is too! Bacteria love to cling to your warm, fuzzy tongue. To prevent bad breath, be sure to: **• Floss once a day, preferably before you brush your teeth.** **• Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes.** **• Scrub your tongue – we recommend a clean tongue scraper!** **• Rinse your mouth after every meal.** **• Get regular exams and cleanings (we’ll remove that nasty gunk for you!)** The better your dental hygiene, the better your breath will be. ![What’s causing my bad breath?](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ora-hydration.jpg) ### PERSISTENT DRY MOUTH As you learned above, bacteria create odors in the mouth! Its best defense? Your saliva! If your mouth isn’t consistently producing the proper saliva amount, bacteria will grow, and your breath will suffer. This is why ‘morning breath’ exists – your mouth naturally creates less saliva as you sleep. However, chronic dry mouth throughout the day should raise concern. You may not be drinking enough water (be sure to get 2.7L a day if you’re a woman and 3.7L if you’re a man). If you are getting enough water in a day, something more serious could be going on. Visit your dentist or doctor ASAP if you frequently experience a dry mouth. ### SMOKING & CHEWING TOBACCO Tobacco is not only bad for your overall health but your oral health too. Smoking and chewing tobacco makes you more vulnerable to tooth decay, gum disease, and infection, and, therefore, halitosis. Plus, that smoky smell is never pleasant! Improve your wellbeing and quit smoking – ask your primary doctor how. ### UNDERLYING CONDITIONS If your bad breath persists even after following the above, you may have an underlying disease or condition. Gastrointestinal disease, tonsillitis, kidney disease, respiratory infections, and other systemic conditions can cause bad breath. To ensure everything is okay, meet with your primary doctor to determine the cause of your bad breath! ### CERTAIN FOODS Certain foods release odor-causing chemicals. Here are some you should avoid for your freshest breath ever: • Garlic\* • Onions\* • Dairy • Canned • Tuna • Horseradish Garlic and onions are especially detrimental to your breath because they are absorbed through your bloodstream. In other words, their effects cannot be eliminated with brushing, mouthwash, or mints – only time. ### HOW TO TREAT BAD BREATH Ora Dental in Scarborough is here to help you eliminate bad breath! Yet the last Canadian Health Measures Survey shows that 83% of adults aged 20 to 79 have bleeding gums. Bleeding gums are the first sign of early gum disease, called gingivitis. If left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis and can lead to tooth and bone loss. Our periodontist can diagnose your gum condition and recommend appropriate treatment. At Ora Dental, we treat all stages of gum disease and help you manage it to support healthier gums and bone, improving your oral health. [BOOK APPOINTMENT](/book-appointment/) ![Dr. Jess dentist in scarborough](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/periodontist-0001.jpg) ## FAQs Is there a difference between gingivitis and periodontitis? Yes, both are gum disease, but they are different stages of it. Gingivitis is the early stage, where people notice bleeding gums. It is reversible. Periodontitis is stages 2 through 4 of gum disease, where symptoms and conditions are more severe and require more extensive treatment. Isn’t gum disease something older people get? No, many people as young as 20 are reporting gingivitis and other gum disease issues. The population of 40-somethings with gum disease is growing much faster than in previous years. Will I lose my teeth? It depends on whether you pay attention to your oral health and seek treatment for gum and bone issues. Gingivitis can be reversed. Other options are available for those with periodontitis. Regular cleanings to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line can help you keep your teeth for a lifetime. What do I need to do to keep my gums healthy? Those with gum disease should be vigilant about their oral health care routine, such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and keeping regular dental appointments for monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance. Can Ora Dental perform gum surgery? Yes, gum surgery is one of our options for treating gum disease. We also specialise in dental implants to replace missing teeth. Can I book an appointment soon? Ora Dental has openings and can schedule an appointment that fits your schedule. We at Ora Dental understand that what works for one person may not be what another needs. That even carries over to how we clean your teeth. Some people in Scarborough have reasonably good teeth with little tartar and plaque. Others have significant plaque and may even have the beginnings of gum disease. There are also those with severe issues that could be quite serious. There isn’t one kind of teeth cleaning to address all these problems. A dentist or hygienist uses one of four types of cleanings that address various stages of mouth problems. ![Scarborough teeth Cleaning and Scaling](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/teeth-cleaning.jpg) - [## General Dental Cleaning](#tab-ce91be7aa802ffd5c61) - [## Deep Cleanings](#tab-96a29941dca8f9fe5d8) - [## Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning](#tab-29e444702f42ab69e1d) - [## Gross Debridement Cleaning](#tab-037b5c391900a12f31e) - [## General Dental Cleaning](#tab-ce91be7aa802ffd5c61) Most people will get a general dental cleaning from their dentist. This is also called a prophylaxis dental cleaning, meaning “to prevent disease.” It’s a preventive measure against problems like gum disease and tooth decay. During this teeth cleaning, a dentist or hygienist removes tartar and plaque from teeth with a water stream or a dental scaler. Those who have maintained dental visits typically only need this type of treatment. - [## Deep Cleanings](#tab-96a29941dca8f9fe5d8) A dentist may advise a deep cleaning to clean plaque and tartar from the gum pockets as well as teeth. Also called scaling and root planing, this is most often used to treat gingivitis and periodontitis. A deep cleaning can be done in one appointment although it can take an hour or more. It may require several appointments if your dentist is treating periodontitis. Severe cases may even require a local anesthetic. This type of clean means the dentist will be going below the gum line to clean out the pockets that fill with tartar, plaque, and even debris. This reduces gum inflammation. The dentist will then do planing, or smoothing out tooth roots so the gums reattach to the teeth. This eliminates the gum pockets. - [## Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning](#tab-29e444702f42ab69e1d) Those who have periodontitis will need cleanings more often than most people. These treatments treat gum disease by removing tartar, and plaque from gum pockets as well as the surfaces. This isn’t significantly different from other cleanings except it must happen more often to combat gum disease. - [## Gross Debridement Cleaning](#tab-037b5c391900a12f31e) These are heavy-duty procedures that are used when there is an enormous amount of tartar and plaque. The typical patient that needs this is those who haven’t gone to a dentist in years or who have had bad oral hygiene. An electric tool is used in this type of cleaning to loosen the tartar. General cleaning is done once the plaque and tartar are loosened. ## The Process of Teeth Cleaning Going to a dentist for teeth cleaning doesn’t just involve cleaning. A dentist, like ours at Ora Dental in Scarborough, will first give you an exam and take X-rays if needed before they work on your teeth. This is an important part of the appointment because it will indicate if there are other more serious problems going on inside your mouth.![](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/the-process-of-teeth-cleaning-1024x258.jpg) Most basic teeth cleanings are done by a hygienist. A dentist will typically perform deep cleanings, periodontal cleanings, and gross debridement cleanings. We will then clean your teeth according to the dentist’s recommendation based on the exam. All cleanings will involve a scaler, which is a metal tool used to scrape plaque and tartar from teeth. After cleaning with the scaler is done, a hygienist will use a high-powered electric toothbrush with gritty toothpaste to clean your teeth again. It will make a grinding sound but removes anything the scaler left behind. It may feel like the hygienist is sanding your teeth but they aren’t removing any enamel. It just cleans up the tartar and other matter left from the scaling. The hygienist will give your teeth an expert flossing. Flossing done by a hygienist is different from what you do at home because they are more efficient in getting extra debris from between your teeth. The hygienist will have you swish a rinse in your mouth, and then apply a fluoride treatment. ## Why Wait? Anyone who has had their teeth cleaned knows how good they feel afterward. They feel smooth and clean on your tongue. Your mouth feels fresh too. Some people are afraid to go to the dentist. Others who have put off a dental visit for so long that they worry about what the dentist or staff will say. They know they have lots of plaque but don’t want to explain why they haven’t had it corrected before now. You don’t need to have any fears about the exam, the cleaning or what our staff may think. We at Ora Dental in Scarborough are here to serve you and ensure you have the best experience possible during your exam and your cleaning. Call our office today and make an appointment for your exam and cleaning!![](https://oradental.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/teeth-cleaning-before-after-1024x272.jpg) ## Teeth Cleaning FAQs 1. What types of dental surgeries are offered at Ora Dental in Scarborough? At Ora Dental, we perform a comprehensive array of dental surgeries, including tooth and wisdom teeth extractions, dental implants, and grafting. Surgeries are performed in accordance with the patient’s needs in order to restore, maintain, and improve the comfort levels of the oral cavity. 2. Why might a tooth need to be extracted? Severe tooth decay, a tooth fracture that cannot be fixed, periodontal disease, and impaction are some of the many reasons a tooth may need to be extracted. To prevent complications in the oral cavity and to maintain the alignment of the other teeth, it may be necessary to remove a tooth. 3. What are the risks of leaving impacted wisdom teeth untreated? Impaction of a wisdom tooth may lead to painful swelling, infection, adjacent tooth damage, and cysts. To avoid complications, removal of the teeth at the time of the first evaluation is recommended. The procedure restores functionality and aids in quick recovery. 4. How do dental implants function as a tooth replacement option? Dental implants are an effective way to replace missing teeth. They serve as the artificial root of a tooth, which anchors the replacement teeth and allows the patient to chew normally. Dental implants prevent jawbone atrophy, improve facial aesthetics, and serve as a long-term solution to missing teeth. 5. What is bone grafting, and why might it be necessary? Jaw bone Grafting is a surgical process which takes place in order to increase the bone volume and density and is required before the implant placed in the jaw for the bone to achieve long-term stability. What orthodontic treatments are available at Ora Dental in Scarborough? At Ora Dental, we provide different kinds of orthodontic care, which include Invisalign clear aligners and Damon braces. They are both effective and different. Invisalign uses a series of clear and removable aligners which gradually move your teeth into place, while Damon braces uses low-friction technology. This makes the whole process more comfortable. They are meant for children, teens, and adults who want a great, perfect smile. 2. How does Invisalign® work, and who is it suitable for? Invisalign® offers clear, custom-tailored aligners designed to fit over the teeth. Each aligner is usually worn for seven days before switching to the next aligner in the sequence. This treatment option best suits individuals with mild to moderately severe cases of dental misalignment. Its discreet nature explains its popularity among adults and teenagers. To facilitate the movement of teeth and the correction of bites, attachments or buttons may be used. 3. What are Damon® braces, and how do they differ from traditional braces? Damon® braces stand apart from traditional metal braces. Using a self-ligating mechanism that decreases friction: braces, clips, and ligatures, and allowing the teeth to move more freely and comfortably. This also results in shorter treatment durations and reduced orthodontic visits. Above and beyond that, Damon® braces are focused on creating a wider and beautiful smile. 4. At what age should a child first visit an orthodontist? The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. Early assessment allows the orthodontist to identify any developing issues and determine the appropriate time to begin treatment. Early intervention can guide the growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth, potentially simplifying future treatment. 5. How long does orthodontic treatment typically take? The complexity of the case and the treatment option selected are the most important determinants of the time it takes to complete orthodontic treatment. For most patients, this takes anywhere from 12 to 24 months. The level of misalignment, the patient’s adherence to the treatment plan (such as wearing aligners and attending follow-up appointments), and the orthodontic technique chosen are some other determinants of the time it takes to complete treatment. 6. Are there any dietary restrictions during orthodontic treatment? Yes, during orthodontic therapy, temporary dietary changes will be needed. Patients with traditional braces should avoid hard, sticky, or chewy food so as not to break the brackets and wires. While users of Invisalign® can remove their aligners and enjoy their regular diets, they must still brush their teeth and aligners afterward to avoid staining and to maintain oral hygiene before reinserting the aligners. 7. How much does orthodontic treatment cost at Ora Dental? What Orthodontics Costs Will Be at Ora Dental Will Significantly Be Influenced By The Kind Of Treatment Approach And Individual Case Complexity. The Price Generated By The Two Approaches Being Considered Which Are Damon® And Invisalign® Will Be Different. At Ora Dental We Offer The Consultations To Help People Understand What Treatments Are Available For Their Individual Needs And What The Expected Costs Are So That They Can Be Fully Informed About The Treatments. 8. A dental implant is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the [jaw](https://oradental.ca/ora-dental-surgery/) or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. A dental implant is a component surgically placed in your jawbone, serving as the root of missing teeth. A dental implant is a surgically placed component in the jawbone that serves as a root for a single anchor or multiple anchor restorations, such as a crown, bridge, or denture, providing the strength and support a natural tooth would give. 2. What are the main benefits of dental implants? Dental implants differ from dentures and crown and bridge work as they are permanent, function fully, mimic the appearance of natural teeth, integrate into the bone, and assist in preserving the health of the jawbone and gums. 3. Are dental implants suitable if I am missing several teeth? Dental implants are an excellent option for single or multiple tooth replacement and for providing a definitive restoration that improves the function and aesthetics of one’s smile, as well as for the overall ability to eat, speak, and smile. 4. How do dental implants preserve jawbone health? The process of osseointegration of the implants removes any need for bone to be resorbed if a removable denture is employed, and thus, the jaw structure and health are maintained. 5. How natural do implant restorations appear and feel? Implants look and function just like your real teeth—offering the same biting strength and aesthetic appearance—so eating and speaking feel completely natural. 6. Do dental implants depend on neighboring teeth for support? No, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not dependent on adjacent teeth. This is different from bridges where surrounding teeth have to be modified for support. 7. How long do dental implants last? With the right maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. They are a long-lasting and permanent solution for tooth loss. 8. How do I get started with dental implants at Ora Dental Scarborough? They are used to reinforce the structure of a damaged, weak, or rotting tooth. This helps to restore the tooth’s natural function and to maintain its size, strength, shape, and appearance. Crowns are extremely important if you have decaying teeth, as you may need a root canal if left untreated. Further damage is thus prevented when placing a crown over a suffering tooth. Without a crown, the tooth is often unsalvageable. Crowns can also replace a missing tooth by being placed on top of a dental implant. ## *What is a Dental Bridge?* While crowns can repair damaged teeth, a bridge’s sole function is to permanently replace missing teeth. If a tooth or multiple teeth are missing, we can close – or bridge – the gaps in your smile using this procedure. The dental bridge is typically made of crowns on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. These crowns support the artificial tooth that is custom-made to fit the empty space. Lastly, the false tooth is cemented in place to give you a flawless, long-lasting smile. Do you think you’re a candidate for dental crowns or bridges?
